Nobody likes to melt in the summer sun let alone in their own home.

Check out our top tips for keeping your home cool during the long Kiwi summer.

CLOSE BLINDS AND CURTAINS

Keep your blinds and curtains closed, especially on north and west-facing windows (and any other windows which get direct sunlight) to significantly cool your home. Better yet, invest in some black-out curtains to shield your home from the harsh summer sun.

MINIMISE HEAT IN THE KITCHEN

When cooking in the kitchen this summer, open a window and keep lids on pots and pans to minimise heat generation.

INSULATION

A well-insulated house is not only cooler in summer but also warmer in winter.

AIR CONDITIONING

- When using the cooling mode on really hot days, it’s important to keep the doors and windows shut and to focus on cooling just one room.

- Set the temperature to around 22-23 degrees (the room won’t cool down any quicker if you set it lower), to avoid using more electricity by overcooling.
